If you plan on grilling your skewers, here’s how to keep your skewers organized, protected, and easily portable with this easy “do it yourself” skewer bag tutorial. This practical, handmade bag is a great sewing project for anyone who loves to cook outdoors, have picnics, and host summer gatherings.
In this tutorial, you’ll find step-by-step photo instructions, clear descriptions, and a video showing you how to make your own skewer bag. It’s a useful project that can be sewn from sturdy fabric, and it’s also a great way to use up leftover fabric from other sewing projects.
Materials
To make a bag for grill skewers, you will need:
- Variegated cotton fabric
- Flizeliny
- Denim fabric
- Drawstring
- Plastic lock adjuster
- Matching thread.
Cutting out pattern pieces
Here you can find all pattern pieces and their dimensions. All dimensions are shown with sewing allowances. Use a 1 cm seam allowance for all seams if not indicated otherwise.
The photo below shows the numbered pieces of the pattern. In total, you will cut out three different shapes.
The detail marked No. 1 is the main bag base. Detail No. 2 is the dimensions of the denim fabric and flizeliny that will be sewn to the inside bottom of the bag so that the ends of the skewers do not pierce the cotton fabric. Since the flizeliny we have is thin, I put it in double layers. Detail No. 3 dimensions are the belt for the bag carry.
Sewing the bag for grill skewers
When you have all the pattern pieces cut out and ready, follow the steps below to sew them together.
Step 1. Measure the length of your grill skewers and cut a rectangular piece of cotton fabric. Based on the dimensions of our grill skewers, we marked the number 1 on the cutout. Cut out the flizeliny and denim fabric according to the dimensions in detail no. 2. Place them both on top of each other on the main part of the bag as shown in picture 1. Then sew everything together where the dotted line shows in picture 2. The red dotted line marks the edge of the denim fabric, which needs to be folded down by 1 cm so the edge is neat and the threads don’t fray.
Step 2. On the opposite side of the fabric, fold the edges as shown in picture 1 and sew 11 cm down the slope (picture 1). Then fold the edge 2 cm away to make room for the drawstring (picture 2).
Step 3. Cut a bag belt from cotton fabric according to the dimensions indicated in the cutout marked No. 3. Fold it in half lengthwise and sew the edges (picture 1). Leave one edge unsewn and use a needle to turn the belt fabric right side out and go around with a finishing line, as we see the dotted line in picture 2.
Place this belt on the main part of the bag in the middle and sew its edges to the base (shown by the white lines in picture 3).
Step 4. Now fold the fabric in half so that the right side of the fabric is on the outside and sew the edge and bottom of the bag as marked by the white dotted line in picture 1. Trim the edges neatly, leaving about 2-3 mm of edge to the seam.
Turn the bag inside out and sew the edge and bottom of the bag again 3 mm from the edge. This double stitch is stronger and looks neater.
Step 5. Turn the bag right side up and, using a safety pin, pull the drawstring through the channel sewn at the top of the bag (picture 1). Thread both ends of the string through the hole in the elastic lock and tie a knot at the end of both ends so that the lock does not fall when you open the bag.
And now your work is done. All you have to do is put the grill skewers in the bag, tie them with a string, and go out into nature to grill some meat.
