Pink and yellow bags

These handmade fabric bags are easy to sew and make great decorative storage items. The outside of the bag is linen with a cheerful pink and yellow lining and a drawstring closure. They look attractive on a shelf in a child’s room, living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom or hallway. They are also perfect for presenting gifts, treats, toys, cosmetics, books or small household items.

Materials

To make pink and yellow bags, you will need:

  1. Linen fabric.
  2. Pink cotton fabric.
  3. Yellow cotton fabric.
  4. Matching thread.

Cutting out pattern pieces

Here you can find all pattern pieces and their dimensions. All dimensions are shown with sewing allowances. Unless otherwise specified, use a 0,5 cm seam allowance for all seams.

  1. The cutout marked 1 indicates the dimensions of the bag. These dimensions are used for both the outside of the bag and the lining. We cut two linen pieces, one pink cotton piece and one yellow.
  2. The cutout marked 2 indicates the drawstring dimensions. Cut out two pink and two yellow.
  3. This detail is a linen ribbon that we will sew onto the linen fabric to form a channel for the drawstrings to be threaded through.

Sewing pink and yellow bags

When you have all the pattern pieces cut out and ready, follow the steps below to sew them together.

Step 1. In the first picture, we see the fabric clippings that we will need for sewing. Then we fold it beautifully and sew the edges with linen ribbon (picture 2). We place the strips on the linen base of the bag and sew them as shown in picture 3 by the black dotted line, forming a channel for the drawstring to be inserted. The strip should be sewn 5 cm from the top edge and there should be a 1 cm free edge on the sides from the strip to the edge.

Step 2. Turn this bag inside out and place it inside the linen bag as shown in picture 2. Connect the top edges of both bags as shown in picture 3 with the green line.

In this step, all you have to do is pull the pink bag out of the linen and sew a 5 cm gap (picture 4).

Step 3. Push the lining inside and topstitch around the bag top. Sew two strings from pink fabric, and use a threading tool to thread them through the formed linen groove on one side of the bag and the other. Tie knots at the ends.

The job is done. All that’s left is to put the loose items in the bag, pull the fabric over the strings, and tie the strings to keep the bag closed.

The bright pink and yellow linings create a cheerful surprise every time the bags are opened, making them both useful and attractive decorative accents throughout the home.

To make it easier for beginners to sew bags, I have included a video below that will complement the photos and descriptions.
