Denim backpack with two pockets

This denim backpack with two pockets is comfortable for everyday use. It is perfect for going to work, the gym, or traveling.

There are also two pockets on the front of the backpack. I closed the pockets with Velcro tape. The edges of the pockets have to be reinforced twice for extra strength.

In addition, one more pocket inside the backpack is sewn to the lining. There you can safely store expensive items. At the top of the backpack, I inserted several metal hole eye-rings for the string.

Between the pockets, there is a band with a fastening that can be adjusted and lifted with a strap either up or down.

The instructions below provide the measurements for cutting out pattern pieces and the main steps for sewing the backpack with two pockets.

Cutting out pattern pieces

Here you can find all pattern pieces and their dimensions. All dimensions are shown with sewing allowances. Use a 1.5 cm seam allowance for all seams if not indicated otherwise.

The photo below shows the numbered pieces of the pattern. The numbers correspond to the cut-out pieces in the following photos. In total, you will cut out eleven different shapes.

Part no. 1 is the base of the bag. The lining should be about 10 cm longer than the base part (no. 1).

  1. Backpack base (the main detail) (1 pcs)
  2. Front pocket closing flap (4 pcs)
  3. The front pockets (2 pcs)
  4. Backpack closing flap (2 pcs)
  5. Strip for a plastic buckle in between the pockets (1 pcs)
  6. Strip for a plastic buckle on the closing flap (1 pcs)
  7. Handle (1 pcs)
  8. Strip for a buckle for the belt adjustment (1 pcs)
  9. Backpack shoulder straps (2 pcs)
  10. Backpack bottom (1 pcs)
  11. Strip connecting lining with the main backpack detail (1 pcs)

Steps for sewing the denim backpack

When all the pattern pieces are cut out and ready, follow the steps below to sew them together.

Step 1. Sew small details like two straps with buckle (no. 5, 6), shoulder belts, front pockets, and pocket flaps with Velco tape.

Step 2. On the backpack’s main detail (no. 1), sew pockets with flaps in the middle. The pockets are sewn slightly raised from the fabric. Between the pockets sew on the strap (no. 5).

Step 3. Sew pieces of closure flap with lining together and turn them out, then sew two seams along the edge. Sew strap no. 6 on the flap in the middle.

Step 4. Connect the main detail backpack sides and sew the bottom detail (no. 10). Secure with one stitch from the outside.

Step 5. Sew the handle (no. 7) on the flap (no. 4). Sew the flap to the main backpack detail so that the seam would be in the middle of the flap.

Step 6. Sew the tape (no. 11) to the top of the lining and join the edges of the lining.

Step 7. Connect the upper lining tape with the main part of the backpack. Sew two seams from the good side. The distance between the seams must be at least 2 cm. The eye-rings must fit in the gap.

Step 8. Finally, sew on the bottom of the lining. Place all eight metal hole eye-rings evenly spaced. Insert the black string into the holes and put a locking regulator on the end of the string.
