Here you will find a tutorial on how to sew a stylish handbag that can be carried both in your hand and shoulder. We will combine dark denim with variegated, flowered cotton. It takes a little time to sew and cut the strips, but it’s worth it, because no one within a 100-mile radius will have such a shoulder handbag like this.

Cutting out pattern pieces

The instructions below provide the measurements for cutting out pattern pieces and the main steps for sewing the shoulder handbag.

Here are all the pattern pieces and their dimensions. All dimensions are shown with sewing allowances. If not indicated otherwise, use a 1 cm seam allowance for all seams.

1 – A denim strip connecting to the flowery cotton strip ( 10 pcs ).

2 – A cotton strip connecting to the denim strip ( 10 pcs ).

3 – The handbag handle ( 1 pc ).

4 – A strip on the handbag ( 1 pc ).

5 – A strip for adjustable buckle ( 1 pc ).

6 – A shoulder strap ( 1 pc ).

In total, you will cut out six different shapes.

Steps for sewing the shoulder handbag

When all the pattern pieces are cut out and ready, follow the steps below to sew them together.

1 Step. Connect all the strips alternately as shown in the first picture. Then fold the fabric joints so that we can sew with a decorative seam where the yellow line is shown in the next picture. So, sew all the strips like this.

2. Step. Join the denim strips 12 cm from the top, hiding the flowery cotton underneath as seen in the first picture, white line.

Sew the shoulder strap ( no.6 ) and handle ( no.3 ) of the bag (picture no. 2). Then sew their ends in the place where the white and red dashes are shown in the third picture. Place the ribbon (no.4) around the base of the bag where the yellow line shows.

3. Step. Sew a small strip (no.4). Put an adjustable buckle on this ribbon and sew the ends of the ribbon to the bottom of the bag where the red dash is in the picture.

Connect the denim strips at the bottom as seen in the second picture, hiding the flowery fabric, and turn the bag inside out, and sew the bottom.

4. Step. Sew the seams on both sides where the red line shows. This will make the bag more oval and have a nicer shape. Then attach the lining to the base at the top and turn it right side out.

5. Step. Insert the lining and about 5-6 cm of the bag’s top fabric into the bag. Sew two decorative seams where shown by the red dotted lines.

Place six metal holes on the top of the handbag strap, approximately equally spaced from each other. Place six metal holes on top of the bag strap, approximately equally spaced apart as shown in the second picture (white dots).

And now all you have to do is sew the bottom of the lining, thread the cord into the metal holes, and thread a string lock-regulator onto the end of the cord.
