Handbag for a girl

Here you will find a tutorial on how to sew a fashionable handbag for a teenage girl. It is made of denim fabric combined with colored cotton. We place a synthetic insert hardener between the base and the lining, which allows the bag to maintain its beautiful shape.

Materials

To make a beautiful handbag for a girl, you will need:

  • Lining fabric
  • Light lilac, red, and blue cotton
  • Denim fabric
  • Synthetic insert hardener
  • Two colors sewing threads no. 120

Cutting out pattern pieces

The instructions below provide the measurements for cutting out pattern pieces and the main steps for sewing the shopping bag.

Here are all the pattern pieces and their dimensions. All dimensions are shown with sewing allowances. If not indicated otherwise, use a 1 cm seam allowance for all seams.

  1. The detail connecting the lining to the main detail of the bag ( cut 2 pcs. ).
  2. The main detail of the bag ( cut 1 pcs. ). Then add two cm to these dimensions and cut out the details from the lilac cotton, lining, and synthetic insert hardener. This will make connecting easier, and you will need to cut off the excess fabric later.
  3. The detail connecting the lining to the side details on the bag ( cut 2 pcs. ).
  4. Side details on the bag ( cut 2 pcs. ). Then plus two cm to these dimensions and cut out the details from the lining (2 pcs), and synthetic insert hardener (2 pcs). This will make connecting easier, and you will need to cut off the excess fabric later.
  5. One circle is cut out of red cotton, the other cut out of blue.
  6. Handbag handles ( cut 2 pcs. ).

In total, you will cut out six different shapes.

Steps for sewing the handbag for a girl

When all the pattern pieces are cut out and ready, follow the steps below to sew them together.

Step 1. On the main piece of denim, cut out circles with radii of 6.5 cm, 4 cm, and 2.5 cm as shown in the picture below. Place the red and blue circles (No.5) under the large holes and sew them, leaving 1 cm of denim edge from the edge, as shown by the yellow dotted line in the next picture.

Then put together the main denim fabric with the lilac cotton detail and sew the edges, as shown by the white dotted line in the next picture.

Step 2. Sew all the circles from largest to smallest, around 1 cm from the edge of the circle, as you sewed the red and blue circles before. Then, cut the edge of the denim around the circle as shown by the green lines in the next picture. Cut all the circles in this way.

Rub the edge of the cut-out circle with your hand or a brush. Do this with all the circles until no more loose small fabric threads.

Step 3. In this step, we need to sew the sides of the bag.

First, sew the denim strip (No. 3) to the lining details, picture 1. Then sew to that strip the denim detail (No. 4), picture 2. Place a synthetic layer between the lining and the denim. Join by sewing around the detail as shown by the yellow line and trim the excess fabric, leaving a 0.5 cm border. Sew two finishing stitches at the top, leaving about 1.5 cm between them, as shown by the red lines.

Step 4. Sew the denim pocket to the lining and sew denim strips (No. 1) to the ends as shown in the next picture. Sew the two handles (No. 6) and sew them to the strips.

Step 5. Sew the edges of the main denim piece onto the synthetic insert hardener. Then sew the edges of the lining to the edges of the base as shown in the red line in the first picture. Turn and sew two finishing stitches as shown by the yellow lines in the second picture. Leave about 1.5 cm between the stitches.

Step 6. To make it easier to sew the sides to the base, sew the edges of all the fabrics as shown by the yellow line in picture 1 and trim the excess neatly so that a 0.5 cm edge remains. The red marks in the picture show where the side parts connect to the base.

The second picture shows the attached side detail, and as you can see, the connecting edge remains on the outside. Remove one buckle at a time and sew everything together like this, and trim neatly, leaving a 0.5 cm border.

Step 7. All we have to do is cut strips of lilac cotton and edge the side seams of the handbag. The strips need to be cut diagonally from the fabric.

You can combine other colors and circle arrangements when sewing this stylish handbag for a girl. Good luck.
